EXPERIMENTS

I tried simulating explosions using Maya particles and fluids .     [ Using Maya Particles ]     [ Using Maya Fluids ]

USING MAYA PARTICLES

The aim of the experiment was to simulate a house exploding using particles. Final Explosion video

STEP 1

The model was taken and a surface shatter done to get the shattered peices. Each individual peice of shatter was then made into an active rigid body and the Ground into a passive rigid body. The debris were connected to a drag and Turbulence feild

STEP 2

Each peice of shatter was then given an initial velocity and spin values so that the debris were thrown outwards. The process was repeated for all peices of shatter.

STEP 3

Each peice of debris was then taken and a particle emitter added to simulate flaming debris and turbulence and uniform feilds were added and an appropriate color set

STEP 4

Another particle emitter was added to create sparks and make to collide with the ground and assigned an appropriate particle cloud shader.

STEP 5

Another emitter is created for the fireburst and placed in the middle of the house. The rate is keyframed at 0 initially and then 4000-5000 at the point of explosion and then 0 again, depending on how big the explosion is .The particle is connected to a drag feild , Uniform feild, and Turbulence feild.
The Fire burst is then shaded with a particle cloud shader of the following network.

STEP 6

Another emitter is created for the smoke and the particle radius size is set to a random value between 1 and 2.A drag and Uniform feild is added and the particle is connected to it.The start frame is set to the frame immediately after the explosion.
The smoke is shaded using the shader from the follwing network.

STEP 7

A big spotlight is set up to simulate the light from the explosion. In addition to this,a point light and another spotlight pointing down at the house are set to simulate the flame light..

The final peice can be viewed here. The debris fire were rendered using Maya hardware and composited with the rest. Final Explosion video
